How to Pack for a Winter Getaway

Wintertime is a great time to get away. Canada has plenty of amazing cities that are perfect to visit during this snowy season—whether you’re skiing in Banff or touring Quebec City’s Winter Festival.

Yet there is one challenge when it comes to packing for your winter vacation: Trying to fit thick cozy clothes into a weekend getaway bag. If you’re going away this winter, make packing easy by following our guide below.

Less Is More

Unlike your summer suitcase, which is light, breezy, and filled to the brim with shorts and sundresses, your winter getaway bag has to fit your favourite cozy items, like those bulky sweaters and thick socks, in the same amount of space.

You might want to pack your three favourite winter sweaters, but you’re better off narrowing it down to two. Pack go-to winter wardrobe items, which will act as base pieces garments for your vacation outfits. You have a whole season to wear oversized sweaters—leave that one chunky cableknit at home this time.

Plan Ahead

This is definitely the best getaway to plan outfits for, especially if you’re already following our “less is more” motto. Not only that, when you plan your outfits beforehand, you can get out sightseeing faster instead of fighting to pull an outfit together from the clothes you packed last minute.

What’s the best way to plan your outfits? Review your trip itinerary to see what you’re doing each day: ice skating in the afternoon, hitting a cocktail bar at night, spending a day at the spa. Think about what you want to wear to each event, and what items you can take from day to night. Matching an outfit to an activity ahead of time will leave you much more relaxed about your vacation wardrobe.

Accessorize!

Items like hats, sweaters, and gloves are small pieces that don’t need much space in your travel bag, and they keep your extremities from freezing.

A pair of black leather gloves are beyond chic and will keep your hands warm while you’re exploring the city or town. A pom pom toque is adorably stylish and ensures your ears are covered from brisk winds. A blanket scarf doubles as both a neck warmer while you’re roaming outdoors and a casual throw while you’re enjoying afternoon wine inside at the ski lodge.

Carry your necessities in a cute bag you can tote along all weekend, like this Prada vitello satchel bag. It’s the perfect sized shoulder bag, made of distressed leather and gold-tone hardware, that adds a pop of colour to your winter ensemble.
